THOMAS B. MODLY

An accomplished strategist and M&A specialist, Tom Modly brings 10 years of corporate development and strategy experience to Baltimore Venture Mentors. Tom spent four years as Director of Strategy and Corporate Development at UNC, in Annapolis, Md., helping the company grow from $350 million to $1 billion in revenues prior to its acquisition by GE in 1996. From 1996 to 1998, Tom was a Vice President with Oxford Associates, a strategy consulting firm in Bethesda, MD, where he worked with Fortune 500 clients in their pursuit of optimized go-to-market strategies, including the early use of the Internet as a route to market. In 1998, Tom co-founded the Empyrean Group (later to be named Iconixx Corporation),where he led the company's merger and acquisition activity. Iconixx became, and remains, a leading IT consulting firm focusing on the web-enablement of traditional businesses.

Tom holds a Bachelor of Science degree with Distinction from the United States Naval Academy, a Master of Arts in Government from Georgetown University, and an MBA with Honors from Harvard Business School. Prior to his business career, Tom was a Naval Helicopter Pilot and an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the United States Air Force Academy.
